Comments From Recent Workshop Participants
“You are an extremely gifted, lucid, intelligent, humorous, organized, confident, talented, self-deprecating human being.
(Before you jump ahead... re-read this... you should be proud of those adjectives. Rarely have so many been attached to only one person...)
In addition, you are also an exceptional artist and teacher.
Perhaps your greatest strength: Your generosity of sharing the information you have.
Many teachers “hold back” their “secrets.” Yes, it's true.
You willingly shared everything (at least we felt you did).
We all felt you wanted us to be better... for ourselves.
You are everything I've wanted in an artist who teaches art:
1. course objectives.
2. starts on time.
3. stays on topic.
4. backs up info w/examples.
5. can demo and talk at the same time.
6. can answer questions before they're asked (can anticipate questions/problems).
7. sent supply list well in advance of workshop.
8. humorous.
9. quick-witted.
10. maximizes available time.
I learn most when the teacher makes a mistake... and attempts to correct it...” —Fran
“Watching you paint was fascinating. Your explanation of how you use colors to suggest skin tones, affect the mood of the painting, add drama – everything about color is helpful to me. I love working with color and go crazy with it. Some guidelines help.
I also liked the way you stressed drawing skills in the first class and helped us to get a likeness to our photos.” —Marlene
“I am very glad to have taken your workshop and really learned a lot , to draw more , to do experimental compositions and painting along with all the tips on handling watercolor. Maybe the most important is the renewed enthusiasm I have for painting.” —Betty
“Myrna, I have enjoyed the workshop so much. I really appreciated the fact that you were so organized in your approach; starting class on time, setting time frames for activities and then sticking to them, having your materials all set and ready to go and bringing examples of your paintings, sketchbooks, reference materials, etc. I personally learn so much more from teachers who have that kind of structure.
I also appreciated your suggestion about just picking one new thing to work on at a time, so it’s not so overwhelming. Because the way I was taught watercolor is so opposite from your style, it has been a bit discouraging. You make it look so easy and then when I try doing it, it’s anything but. So I find myself reverting back to my safe way of doing things instead of persevering until I get the hang of it. However, slow and steady, trying one new aspect at a time, will work for me if I just put in the time. Thank you.” —Lorrie
What was the most valuable aspect of the workshop for you?
“Your fun and free/non-rigid approach, while maintaining structure and theory as the backdrop. Your big, colorful, and quick style of painting.
To test the color choices and practice on test sheet first. It is interesting to see the difference, and how reckless we feel we can play on a test sheet.
To paint one person/pose several times in different ways.
The value study. Please become famous, quickly! I like your interesting way of cropping. If more people do the same, then the conventional way of portrait painting will be changed.”
